Edwin Urbina, of Morristown, New Jersey, was charged this week in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son.

Patch reports that officers responded to a hospital on Friday, after a young boy was beaten at the Oyo Hotel in East Hanover earlier that day. When they arrived, they found a 3-year-old boy, Liam, deceased. Police said the child’s mother, Krystal Straw, was not at the hotel when the boy was injured. Urbina was supposed to be taking care of him, police said.

Urbina allegedly told Straw to delete information from her phone and protect him when investigators asked about the child’s death. Straw then took her son to the Morristown Medical Center, where medical staff ultimately contacted police because the boy was in full cardiac arrest.

Investigators said Straw took the child somewhere else before taking him to the hospital. She was subsequently arrested for endangering the welfare of children, hindering apprehension or prosecution, tampering with a witness, and tampering with Evidence.

Morris County Deputy Medical Examiner, Dr. Carlos Fonseca, ruled Liam’s death as a homicide. Police began searching for Urbina, who already fled before they arrived.

According to the East Hanover Police Department, Urbina arrived at the Morris County Administration Building and turned himself in. He remains behind bars on murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and witness and evidence tampering charges.
